Poliomyelitis

This infection, caused by the poliovirus, is transmitted from person to person through the oral-fecal route or infected droplets in the respiratory system. In extreme cases, the virus attacks the spinal cord or brain stem which can lead to paralysis, most often in the legs.

Travellers should ensure that they are up-to-date with their routine vaccinations, but a one-time polio booster is recommended for adults if visiting countries where polio has not been eradicated.
