African Tick Bite Fever

African Tick Bite Fever (South African Spotted Fever) is caused by the bacteria Rickettsia africae. Symptoms include fever and a rash occurring 3 to 7 days following a tick bite.

Travellers engaging in outdoor activities in rural areas, such as campers and hikers, should take measures to prevent tick bites. Tick-bite prevention measures include applying DEET-containing repellent to exposed skin and permethrin spray or solution to clothing and gear.
