Mediterranean Spotted Fever

Mediterranean Spotted Fever (also known as Boutonneuse Fever) is a tick-borne rickettsial disease caused by the bacterium Rickettsia conorii and transmited by  dog and rodent ticks. Symptoms include fever, rash, and a tache noire (necrotic black ulcer or scab) at the site of the tick bite.

Travellers, especially those engaging in outdoor activities in rural areas, such as campers and hikers should take measures to prevent tick bites. Tick-bite prevention measures include applying a DEET-containing repellent to exposed skin and permethrin spray or solution to clothing and gear.
